CELEBRITY Retrospective

Considered by many to be one of the best actresses of her generation, Nicole Kidman has become a Hollywood staple over the past several decades. Oftentimes understated, one must only look at how far she’s come on and off-screen to realize the talent we’re dealing with here.

One of Australia’s best exports, no doubt, Kidman was actually born in the United States. In Honolulu, Hawaii, to be more precise. Born to Australian parents, she moved to the Land Down Under when she was four. And there she would grow up and rise to fame on Aussie shows and films in the ‘80s.

Then came 1990 and ‘Days of Thunder,’ in which she starred with her future husband, Tom Cruise. And wasn’t that relationship just a whirlwind?

By 1992, she had scored her first Golden Globe nomination for the film ‘Billy Bathgate,’ in the category of Best Supporting Actress. More critical and commercial successes followed, and by 1996 she had finally earned a Golden Globe statue, this for ‘To Die For’ in the Best Actress – Motion Picture Comedy or Musical category.

Fast forward to 2001 and ‘Moulin Rouge!,’ the film that changed everything for Kidman. Starring opposite Ewan McGregor, she would nab her first Oscar nomination for this film.

As for a win at the Academy Awards, she wouldn’t have to wait long. In 2003, she won the Oscar (her only to date) for ‘The Hours.’

Since then, Kidman’s projects have often been a mix of hits and misses (‘Cold Mountain’ was a stronger effort; ‘Bewitched’ not so much). But her personal life certainly took a turn for the positive, and she married country musician Keith Urban in 2006.

Then came 2011, the year in which she was again nominated for Best Actress at the Academy Awards, this time for ‘Rabbit Hole.’ She continued to pick up major nominations in the years that followed, but it seemed she was out of favor at the Oscars.

Enter 2017, and her first Oscar nom in the Best Supporting Actress category, this for ‘Lion.’ While she didn’t win, 2017 proved to be one heck of a year for Kidman, with her return to television for HBO’s ‘Big Little Lies’ a standout moment. The results of this effort? An Emmy win.

A true force to be reckoned with, Nicole Kidman is most certainly not going anywhere anytime soon.
