The popular doll can't be restrained to her Malibu Dream House, and her eyes are set on Hollywood.
A feature film surrounding Barbie has been in the works for years now, but Mattel has just partnered with Warner Bros. and things seem to be picking up speed, particularly with casting decisions. As the voice of the famous American doll, they're leaning towards an Aussie: none other than Margot Robbie.
In 2016, however, it was reported that Amy Schumer would star in the film, which was also billed at the time as a modern feminist take on the toy, according to The Hollywood Reporter. That surely would've been a refreshing departure from the impossible standards Barbie dolls have placed on women from a very young age, but oh well.
The comedian, unfortunately, dropped out due to "scheduling conflicts," and Anne Hathaway was then set to replace her. At that time, Mattel was still partnered with Sony, but their recent partnership with Warner Bros. has excited a new buzz.
There are also talks of 'Wonder Woman' director Patty Jenkins taking on the film, which is a good sign that they haven't abandoned the idea of tackling feminism and identity through the age-old plastic bombshell.
