The good old days - Thinking of crochet conjures images of grandmothers sitting in their armchairs, knitting socks and sweaters among a jumble of huge balls of wool and needles.

Origin - No one knows exactly when crochet began, but the word comes from the medieval French word "crokét" meaning hook. The expression "broder au crochet," which means "embroidering by hook," was first used in France in the 19th century.

60s crochet - In the 1960s, crochet clothing took over women's style. English actress Susan George was a big crochet aficionado, appearing here in a crochet dress in 1969.

Daring - In this decade, knitted pieces were worn by women who were looking for a more "discreet" look, while more daring pieces which showed more skin and had a wider guage, were crocheted. German actress Uta Levka wears an entirely crochet outfit here in 1969.
