The UK and the US share many ties, so it’s no surprise that American leaders have made presidential visits to the UK and Ireland for over 100 years. Starting with Woodrow Wilson, every president since has paid a visit to the UK, meeting with the British royal family, and often the Prime Minister as well.
Donald Trump made his first presidential visit in 2018, facing major backlash including a giant baby blimp made in his semblance (with the addition of extra-orange skin and a phone in his hand) which was flown in protest of his visit, due to his expressed views, his history of alleged sexual misconduct, and his policies. Now, the blimp has been fired up again for his second visit.
Before he even touched down for his 2019 visit, he had already set off multiple Twitter storms. The first came from his interview with The Sun, in which he described the Duchess of Sussex, formerly American actress Meghan Markle, as “nasty” after he was told that she once called him “misogynistic.” That was only made worse when he lied about it the day before his arrival, tweeting: "I never called Meghan Markle 'nasty.'"
Then, moments before landing outside the UK capital on Air Force One, he took a shot at London Mayor Sadiq Khan, who during the weekend had compared Trump’s language to a 20th-century fascist.
"@SadiqKhan, who by all accounts has done a terrible job as Mayor of London, has been foolishly ‘nasty’ to the visiting President of the United States, by far the most important ally of the United Kingdom. He is a stone cold loser who should focus on crime in London, not me," Trump tweeted.
While the prospect of Brexit puts more emphasis on the relationship between the UK and US, all eyes are on Trump as he meets with Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Charles, and Theresa May.
