Anne Frank would've celebrated her 90th birthday today
She can be honored at the memorial and museum dedicated to her
Had she lived, WWII icon Anne Frank would have celebrated her 90th birthday today. But, of course, the diarist’s larger-than-life status is ultimately tied to her early and unfortunate demise.
It’s true that, good health and other factors permitting, Anne Frank would have turned 90 in 2019. But what is fact is that this year also marks 74 years since her passing. Let that sink in: it’s been almost three-quarters of a century since the world lost the teenager who would become one of the most well-known (if not the most well-known) diarists in history, and an enduring symbol of WWII.
Estimates put Anne Frank's last days on Earth at between February and March of 1945. Dying of typhus at the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp, her memory managed to live on after her diary, detailing her life in hiding, was published following her death.
That very diary is tied to the German-born, Dutch-Jewish teen’s birthday: she received it upon turning 13, writing that it was “Maybe one of my nicest presents…”
But beyond her diary, we can continue to honor Anne Frank in a variety of ways, including by visiting the Anne Frank House museum and a statue of the young woman that stands nearby, this in Amsterdam.
Explains the Anne Frank House website:
“Today, we also reflect on Anne Frank's life and legacy in other places and in other ways. On social media, people use the hashtag #Anne90 to share what Anne means to them. The Anne Frank House offers special educational activities for museum visitors and school classes, and every visitor receives a postcard. Our partners in Berlin, Buenos Aires, and London are also paying attention to Anne Frank's 90th birthday.”
Indeed, we can pay our respects to Anne Frank and the many victims of the Holocaust at memorials throughout the world, as seen in this gallery.
