Taylor Swift’s music video for 'You Need to Calm Down’ was recently released, setting the song on the path to be this summer’s major gay anthem.
Now the singer is speaking out about this somewhat recent public support for the LGBTQ community, explaining in an interview with Vogue that a conversation with friend Todrick Hall, who appears in the video, made her realize she had to be more vocal.
"Maybe a year or two ago, Todrick and I are in the car, and he asked me, 'What would you do if your son was gay?'"
"The fact that he had to ask me ... shocked me and made me realize that I had not made my position clear enough or loud enough," she said. "If my son was gay, he’d be gay. I don’t understand the question."
"If he was thinking that, I can’t imagine what my fans in the LGBTQ community might be thinking," she continued. "It was kind of devastating to realize that I hadn’t been publicly clear about that."
Well she's certainly made it clear now! Indeed, in this last century every generation has had more than their fair share of gay anthems. While 'You Need to Calm Down’ wouldn’t have fit in with the disco hits of the ‘70s, it’s posed to become this season’s gay anthem, if not the next decade’s.
