Imagine being at home, waking up, and stepping out of your front door to face -50°C (-58ºF) temperatures. If that seems like an appealing way to start your day, you'll love getting to know the coldest inhabited place on our planet. It's called Oymyakon, and it's located in the northeastern part of Russia. It has registered temperatures that have reached below a chilling -70°C (-94ºF). It may not seem real, but this Russian city and its inhabitants are used to it.
When temperatures get this low, your eyelashes actually freeze. It's the kind of cold that hurts your bones. Proudly referred to as "The Pole of the Cold," Oymyakon has a population of about 500 people. In the dead of winter, a day in Oymyakon only lasts for a few hours.
Despite the cold, Oymyakonians still have a good time. Instagram photos surface of locals taking selfies with their white, icy eyelashes. Another stunning winter image was taken by Petr Chugunov, a photographer from Yakutsk. He photographed a ballerina posed in the snow-covered streets. “I really did take pictures of the ballerina outside in minus 41, it is not Photoshopped,” he told The Siberian Times. “It was my idea, actually it is my project, to photograph ballerinas on the city streets,” Chugunov said.
Interested in turning into a human popsicle? The frosty makeup and otherworldly backdrops are now making Oymyakon a tourist destination, but just for the bravest of souls.
On the other hand, if you prefer the heat and cannot even imagine going to such a place, click on the gallery and marvel at this frozen spectacle of nature from somewhere warm and cozy. Learn more about this icy village, and see photos of the winter beauty that pulls people in despite the temperatures.
